Apnea

Apnea

$78.07

Apnea is a term for suspension of external breathing. During apnea there is no movement of the muscles of respiration and the volume of the lungs initially remains unchanged. Depending on the patency (openness) of the airways there may or may not be a flow of gas between the lungs and the environment; gas exchange within the lungs and cellular respiration is not affected. Apnea can be voluntarily achieved (e.g., holding ones breath ), drug induced (e.g., opiate toxicity), mechanically induced (e.g., strangulation or choking), or it can occur as a consequence of neurological disease or trauma. Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Obstructive Sleep Apnea

$79.66

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common sleep apnea caused by obstruction of the airway. It is characterized by pauses in breathing during sleep. These episodes, called apneas (literally, without breath ), each last long enough that one or more breaths are missed, and occur repeatedly throughout sleep. In obstructive sleep apnea, breathing is interrupted by a physical block to airflow, despite the effort to breathe. Author: Surhone, Lambert M./ Timpledon, Miriam T./ Marseken, Susan F. Central Sleep Apnea

Central Sleep Apnea

$89.22

Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. Central sleep apnea (CSA) or central sleep apnea syndrome (CSAS) is a sleeprelated disorder in which the effort to breathe is diminished or absent, typically for 10 to 30 seconds, either intermittently or in cycles and is usually associated with a reduction in blood oxygen saturation. It is a collective term referring to two breathing disorders: CheyneStokes respiration and periodic breathing. CSA is usually due to an instability in the bodys feedback mechanisms that control respiration. Adults suffering from congestive heart failure are at risk for a form of central sleep apnea called CheyneStokes respiration. This is periodic breathing with recurrent episodes of apnea alternating with episodes of rapid breathing. The Quick And Easy Sleep Apnea Book

The Quick And Easy Sleep Apnea Book

$7.99

If you have sleep apnea, think you might have it, or know someone who does, this book is for you! Sleep apnea is a relatively new subject in health care. It is very common and is associated with many other medical conditions, particularly high blood pressure, heart disease, and strokes. However, awareness about sleep apnea is lacking, and misconceptions are common. It is very easy to pass off the signs and symptoms of sleep apnea. Most people with this condition don’t even know they have it. This is very unfortunate because effective, even life-transforming, treatment is available. The consequences of untreated sleep apnea are wide-ranging and can be devastating. This book is a concise, illustrated, practical, and readable guide to this common and potentially serious condition. The reader will learn about when to suspect sleep apnea, what other conditions are linked to it, why it is important to detect it, how to get tested for it, and what to expect if treatment is required. The book is written by a doctor who is involved in the care of patients with sleep apnea and many of the health problems that go with it.

Assessment of Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome

Assessment of Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome

$124.27

Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS) is a very common sleep disorder that is associated with cardiovascular and neurocognitive impairments. The pathophysiological mechanisms underlying the morbidity of OSAS are not completely understood, which make the research on the OSAS an important issue. Obstructive sleep apnea episodes were carefully selected and segmented in three parts, the OSA event and a certain period immediately preceding and following the event, in order to assess the dynamic electroencephalographic (EEG) power changes, in four frequency bands: delta, theta, alpha and beta. Autonomic Nervous System activity was also assessed through the spectral analysis of heart rate variability components in the three mentioned periods. Continuous wavelet transform was the elected spectral analysis technique. To better visualize the EEG spectral changes during OSA episodes across the whole brain, topographic EEG brain mapping was carried out. This research should be especially useful to health professionals, who are focused on sleep disorders, or to engineers interested in the analysis of biomedical signals. Why?

Why?

$4.79

WHY? Why do African American children fill the rolls of low achievers? Why do African American children fill the rolls of needs improvement schools? Why do African American children fill the rolls of high school dropouts? Why do African American children fill the rolls of special education classes? The answers to these questions are not found in the traditional educational setting; nor are they found in the plethora of text devoted to social, economic, and educational reforms. The sub proficiency performances of many African American children in reading and reading comprehension contribute significantly to the educational, social, health and economic gaps in our schools and our society. As witnessed by many, it is the ability to read which allows a child to transcend even the poorest environment and social circumstances, and succeed in life. The ability to read is not innate; it is a learned skill that is dependent on the development of the neural (brain) cells necessary for memory. Sleep disordered breathing conditions, like Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS), impact the development of these cells and learning to read becomes difficult. The early diagnosis and treatment of OSAS will give these children an opportunity to learn to read, not be left behind, and develop to their maximum potential. IF YOUR CHILD SNORES, HE/SHE MAY HAVE OBSTRUCTIVE SLEEP APNEA SYNDROME. ASK YOUR DOCTOR TODAY.

Respironics System One REMstar Auto CPAP Machine

Respironics System One REMstar Auto CPAP Machine

$793.01

Features of the Respironics System One REMstar Auto CPAP Machine: The Philips-Respironics “System One” REMstar Auto with A-FLEX takes a smarter approach to the entire sleep management process. New features such as resistance control, advanced event detection and response, upgraded data management and reporting, and A-FLEX put this CPAP machine on the cutting edge. A-Flex is designed to work with Respironics’ clinically proven auto CPAP algorithm to improve comfort even more by matching pressure delivery to the patient’s entire breathing cycle. Like C-Flex, A-Flex provides flow-based pressure relief at the beginning of exhalation. Like Bi-Flex, A-Flex softens the pressure transition from inhalation to exhalation to provide additional comfort in an auto-CPAP mode. The pressure profile mirrors the patient’s breathing, and with the auto algorithm intelligence, it will respond to the patient’s therapeutic need throughout the sleep session. The System One resistance control allows the patient to tell the machine what type of mask you are using such as a nasal, full face, or nasal pillow. The machine then makes adjustments for optimal flow depending on your mask. Each Respironics mask will now come with a resistance control setting letting you know how to set your machine to match your mask. Philips-Respironics has upgraded their event detection algorithm to include data on Snoring, Periodic Breathing (PB), Respiratory Effort-Related Arousals (RERAs), Apnea Hypopnea Index (AHI), leak, Clear Airway Apnea (CA), Obstructed Airway Apnea (OA), Flow Limitation (FL), and Hypopnea (HY). The REMstar Auto will also record Patterns of use and Flow waveform data. With this information, your physician will be able to better determine the best possible solutions for your sleep therapy. In addition to detecting the above events, the REMstar Pro will respond to FL, RERA, Snore, leak, OA, and HY. If the REMstar Pro detects that any of these events are about to occur, it will adjust pressure accordingly to compensate for the event. The PR System One uses a SD card for data collection. Prior to the System One, patients were required to use a specialized card reader when uploading sleep data to a computer. Philips-Respironics has made this process easier by using the standard SD card, giving the patient the ability to use any SD reader to upload sleep data. Made in the USA. Auto dimming LED helps create a darker room for easy sleeping. Compliance meter breathing detection. Auto Titrating – Pressure levels will automatically change throughout the night to reflect the patient’s needs. Includes the Respironics Performance Tubing.

It is a sign that is indicative of several conditions including cardiac tamponade, pericarditis, chronic sleep apnea, croup, and obstructive lung disease (e.g. asthma, COPD). The paradox in pulsus paradoxus is that, on clinical examination, one can detect beats on cardiac auscultation during inspiration that cannot be palpated at the radial pulse. Modafinil

Modafinil

$81.25

Modafinil is an analeptic drug manufactured by Cephalon, and is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of narcolepsy, shift work sleep disorder, and excessive daytime sleepiness associated with obstructive sleep apnea. Modafinil, like other stimulants, increases the release of monoamines, specifically the catecholamines norepinephrine and dopamine, from the synaptic terminals. However, modafinil also elevates hypothalamic histamine levels, leading some researchers to consider Modafinil a wakefulness promoting agent rather than a classic amphetaminelike stimulant (as evidenced by the difference in cFos distribution caused by modafinil as compared to amphetamine). Despite modafinils histaminergic action, it still partially shares the actions of amphetamineclass stimulants due to its effects on norepinephrine and dopamine. An NIAAA study highlighted the need for heightened awareness for potential abuse of and dependence on modafinil in vulnerable populations due to the drugs effect on dopamine in the brains reward center. Agonal Respiration

Agonal Respiration

$58.94

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Agonal respiration is an abnormal pattern of breathing characterized by shallow, slow, irregular inspirations followed by irregular pauses. It may also be characterized by gasping, labored breathing, accompanied by strange vocalizations and myoclonus. Possible causes include cerebral ischemia, extreme hypoxia or even anoxia. Agonal breathing is an extremely serious medical sign requiring immediate medical attention, as the condition generally progresses to complete apnea and heralds death. The term is sometimes used to refer to labored, gasping breathing patterns accompanying organ failure, SIRS, septic shock, and metabolic acidosis, or in general any labored breathing, including Biots respirations and ataxic respirations. Correct usage would restrict the term to the last breaths before death. Agonal respirations are also commonly seen in cases of cardiogenic shock or cardiac arrest where agonal respirations may persist for several minutes after cessation of heartbeat. The presence of agonal respirations in these cases indicates a more favorable prognosis than in cases of cardiac arrest without agonal respirations. Dr. Schenck discusses the causes and treatments for common problems-insomnia, restless legs syndrome, sleep apnea, and more. But what sets this book apart is the rare glimpse it offers into the cutting-edge science that he and others have pioneered in identifying, understanding, and explaining the realm of "parasomnias"-the mysterious, more extreme sleep disorders, such as dream enactment, sleep-related eating disorder, sexsomnia, sleepwalking, sleep terrors, sleep paralysis, and even sleep violence, which affect at least 20 million Americans. Comprehensive, engrossing, and backed by the latest medical research, Sleep is a groundbreaking work about what continues to be one of our most mysterious medical puzzles-making it an indispensable guide for sufferers of all sleep disorders and their families. We spend more than 200,000 hours sleeping in a lifetime, the equivalent of more than 8,000 days. Helps Relieve Symptoms of: Sleeplessness, difficulty falling asleep, waking frequently, poor sleep quality. Deep, Calm, Restful Sleep. Non-addictive Stress-related insomnia, snoring and sleep apnea are among the top reasons Americans are losing sleep, according to the National Sleep Foundation. Continued sleep deprivation over two nights or more can have an adverse effect on your mental and physical health, as well as on such conditions as diabetes, obesity and high blood pressure. Why do we sleep? The inability to get a good nights sleep can result in both health and safety hazards. Researchers say that when we are deprived of our suggested eight hours of sleep, we subject ourselves to irritability, attention deficits and a compromised immune system. Recent research has isolated products of the body’s immune system that seem to be sleep-inducers and may be a good indication that the body needs to sleep to help support and even regenerate its immune system. Possible Causes of Poor Sleep: Stress (mental or emotional), daily anxiety, physical challenges including restless legs, caffeine intake, irregular schedules, alcohol and nicotine consumption, occasional pain and discomfort. Effects of Sleeplessness Difficulties falling asleep and staying asleep affects more than 84 million people! It is characterized by difficulty initiating or maintaining a deep, refreshing sleep, waking up throughout the night, waking up early and being unable to get back to sleep, and waking up feeling tired or un-refreshed. The day following a sleepless night may cause symptoms which may affect your mood, be a source of anxiety, result in a lower level of physical and mental well-being, and cause unwanted changes in your usual level of concentration, memory and ability to accomplish more challenges and tasks. The National Commission on Sleep Disorders indicated in a 1998 report that sleep deprivation costs billions of dollars annually in accidents and lost productivity, higher stress, shortened tempers, overall fatigue, lower motivation, slower reflexes and more mistakes.

Rhododendron Wine Factory: Memoirs of a Wanderer

The author tells stories about his international wandering. In India he writes about his childhood and growing up in boarding school. He experiences frustrations of a child living with a dorm bully. His story The Year I Became a Thief describes his humorous rationale for his resulting strange thefts. In Bears Cave he describes a terrifying cave exploration with his older brother where they almost lose their lives. Bergsma resided twelve years in Nigeria. He made close friends with many of the traditional people resulting from both his work and his hobby, hunting. Fat Hearts is a story of Asema Kehe, his hunting companion for twelve years and their many unusual experiences in the bush together. After twenty five years apart, Bergsma returns to Nigeria and finds his dying friend. In The Salt Makers he becomes lost on a hunt and ends up in compound where six wild looking Utur tribesmen are boiling something in a huge metal pot. Bergsmas attempt to solicit assistance by using pantomime is a hilarious spoof of cross cultural misunderstanding. While in Yemen Arab Republic, in Sleep Deprivation he becomes involved with Russian spies and a noisy amorous couple in a hotel room in Sanaa. In Belize he accompanies a project student home. He stays overnight with the student in a tiny stilt house above a swamp and becomes acquainted intimately with Sleep Apnea when his partner dies a hundred times a night. In Egypt, with his family, they descend ancient stone steps under a pyramid. He discovers he has a serious case of tombaphobia in Pharaohs Tomb. His memoirs speak of the birth and rebirth of ideas and beliefs over a lifetime; we are born in mystery, we live in mystery and wedie in mystery. Author: Bergsma, Harold M. Clinical Handbook of Sleep Dis

Clinical Handbook of Sleep Dis

$135.84

Once again, Dr. Schaefer has produced an excellent, practical resource geared to practitioners working with children and families. Sleep disorders are frequently overlooked and undertreated in infants and children, yeat are some of their most prevalent problems. One in three families of preschoolers and early schoolage children reports significant sleep disturbances in their youngsters. These disorders cause tremendous stress to familiesparticularly those with two working parentswho go through nightly battles with children who have trouble going to sleep, awaken repeatedly, have nightmares, or regularly enter parental beds. Clinical Handbook of Sleep Disorders in Children describes and defines problems and solutions in this emerging field. The contributors to this volume also address more complex difficulties such as sleep apnea, narcolepsy, teeth grinding, bedwetting, night terrors, and sleepwalking, and share the most recent research findings regarding sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). The handbooks treatment approach is to work directly with parents to determine environmental influences, such as their own behaviors that reinforce bad sleeping habits; to provide parental therapy as needed; and to help parents develop a behavioral program to teach their own children to achieve more effective sleep behaviors. This is a particularly attractive approach, as it empowers parents with solutions to the problems that previously overwhelmed them, and makes them feel more effective in their role as parents. The book is highly recommended for any clinician who works with children. Lynnette Johnson, Ph. D. Author: Schaefer, Charles E. Respironics RUSleeping RTS Screener for Apneic Events

Respironics RUSleeping RTS Screener for Apneic Events

$659.99

RUSleeping RTS Screener for Apneic Events You now have an immediate solution to offer your patients who are on a waiting list for a PSG. The RUSleeping RTS is an easy-to-use, same-day, objective method for patients who have been recommended for a PSG but can’t be scheduled right away due to facility backlog. You can now quickly create a relationship with patients, and know their apneic (AH) scores, before their PSG. Referring physicians can use the device to pre-screen patients for apneic events. Based on the patient’s overnight score, the physician can easily tell if the patient is a likely candidate for an immediate PSG. How it works: Immediate Knowledge of Apneic Events – Helps You and Your Patients. The RUSleeping RTS is an in-home objective screening device that provides real-time results. Through immediately discovering if patients have a low or high apneic score, you can quickly and easily determine their need for a PSG. By having this objective information to discuss with patients, you can relate the link between their apneic results and the possibility of sleep apnea. This may help to overcome their reluctance about the need for a complete PSG and get them one step closer to diagnosis and treatment. The lightweight and compact device provides continuous apneic event scoring. It is convenient to operate and can be re-used. No accessory equipment, software or electrical outlet is needed. Patient instructions are short and simple. Displays: Average hourly apneic events. Total nightly apneic events. Apneic events by hour. Advanced airflow-pressure technology. Direct readout; no software required. On-screen visual status indicator. Nine-hour recording time. Acute and Emergent Events in Sleep Disorders

Acute and Emergent Events in Sleep Disorders

$51.29

America is a 24/7 lifestyle. This makes sleep–especially disruptions in sleep–a pressing concern for many Americans. According to the National Sleep Foundation (NSF), approximately 40 million Americans suffer from chronic sleep disorders, and an estimated 20-30 million others experience sleep-related problems. Chronic sleep disorders may also lead to psychiatric disorders such as depression and schizophrenia. Moreover, neurological disorders such as seizures, strokes, Parkinson’s, etc, and medical disorders such as asthma or arrhythmia, also affect the quality of sleep Americans receive.Acute and Emergent Events in Sleep Disorders creates awareness for the management of disorders that occur during sleep. Chokroverty and Sahota bring greater awareness to the treatment of sleep disorders, as well as treatments of neurological, medical, and psychiatric disorders. The book has six different sections covers a wide range of topics dealing with how to treat and manage these events. For example, when to prescribe CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) machines for sleep apnea patients’ whose risks are doubled for stroke or death, as compared to those without the disorder. Another segment discusses treatment of Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS), a movement disorder which is amplified when trying to rest. Managing depression, which affects patients’ sleep cycles, is analyzed as well as its relation to sleep-deprivation and insomnia. Considerations for sleep disorders in children, such as Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) are also presented. This book serves an effective tool for neurologists, clinical neuroscientists, residents, and fellows.

 Agonal Respiration

Agonal Respiration

$37

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Agonal respiration is an abnormal pattern of breathing characterized by shallow, slow, irregular inspirations followed by irregular pauses. The term is sometimes used to refer to labored, gasping breathing patterns accompanying organ failure, SIRS, septic shock, and metabolic acidosis, or in general any labored breathing, including Biot’s respirations and ataxic respirations.

Beyond Alzheimer's: How to Avoid the Modern Epidemic of Dementia

Beyond Alzheimer’s: How to Avoid the Modern Epidemic of Dementia

$24.95

This groundbreaking explanation of the causes and treatment of Alzheimer’s disease rests on the author’s belief that Alzheimer’s is merely one of several types of dementia—and that in most cases dementia is avoidable. He further explains that the various forms of dementia may well be different manifestations of the same set of underlying problems. Rather than being the inevitable result of aging, the author asserts dementia is primarily the result of bad diet, stress, lack of mental and physical exercise, and other poor lifestyle choices. Dr. Mendelson begins his book with a straightforward explanation of how the brain ages—physically, structurally, and chemically. He then explains the various methods for diagnosing dementia, as well as how it can often be misdiagnosed if a person has suffered a head injury or stroke, has a hormone or vitamin deficiency, or is taking a medication whose side effects can mimic dementia. The remainder of the book is prescriptive, and offers hope to both Alzheimer’s patients and their caregivers by recommending scientifically tested herbs, vitamins and nutraceuticals that can help mitigate or delay the effects of dementia. Finally, the author suggests lifestyle changes that might help a person avoid dementia altogether, commonsense health tips that include steps to prevent heart disease and diabetes, treatment for sleep apnea, maintaining an ideal body weight, and even engaging in a more active social life.
