Obstructive Sleep Apnea $79.66 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common sleep apnea caused by obstruction of the airway. It is characterized by pauses in breathing during sleep. These episodes, called apneas (literally, without breath ), each last long enough that one or more breaths are missed, and occur repeatedly throughout sleep. In obstructive sleep apnea, breathing is interrupted by a physical block to airflow, despite the effort to breathe. Author: Surhone, Lambert M./ Timpledon, Miriam T./ Marseken, Susan F. Assessment of Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome $124.27 Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS) is a very common sleep disorder that is associated with cardiovascular and neurocognitive impairments. The pathophysiological mechanisms underlying the morbidity of OSAS are not completely understood, which make the research on the OSAS an important issue. Obstructive sleep apnea episodes were carefully selected and segmented in three parts, the OSA event and a certain period immediately preceding and following the event, in order to assess the dynamic electroencephalographic (EEG) power changes, in four frequency bands: delta, theta, alpha and beta. Autonomic Nervous System activity was also assessed through the spectral analysis of heart rate variability components in the three mentioned periods. Continuous wavelet transform was the elected spectral analysis technique. To better visualize the EEG spectral changes during OSA episodes across the whole brain, topographic EEG brain mapping was carried out. This research should be especially useful to health professionals, who are focused on sleep disorders, or to engineers interested in the analysis of biomedical signals. Central Sleep Apnea $89.22 Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. Central sleep apnea (CSA) or central sleep apnea syndrome (CSAS) is a sleeprelated disorder in which the effort to breathe is diminished or absent, typically for 10 to 30 seconds, either intermittently or in cycles and is usually associated with a reduction in blood oxygen saturation. It is a collective term referring to two breathing disorders: CheyneStokes respiration and periodic breathing. CSA is usually due to an instability in the bodys feedback mechanisms that control respiration. Adults suffering from congestive heart failure are at risk for a form of central sleep apnea called CheyneStokes respiration. This is periodic breathing with recurrent episodes of apnea alternating with episodes of rapid breathing. The Quick And Easy Sleep Apnea Book $7.99 If you have sleep apnea, think you might have it, or know someone who does, this book is for you! Sleep apnea is a relatively new subject in health care. It is very common and is associated with many other medical conditions, particularly high blood pressure, heart disease, and strokes. However, awareness about sleep apnea is lacking, and misconceptions are common. It is very easy to pass off the signs and symptoms of sleep apnea. Most people with this condition don’t even know they have it. This is very unfortunate because effective, even life-transforming, treatment is available. The consequences of untreated sleep apnea are wide-ranging and can be devastating. This book is a concise, illustrated, practical, and readable guide to this common and potentially serious condition. The reader will learn about when to suspect sleep apnea, what other conditions are linked to it, why it is important to detect it, how to get tested for it, and what to expect if treatment is required. The book is written by a doctor who is involved in the care of patients with sleep apnea and many of the health problems that go with it. |

Apnea $78.07 Apnea is a term for suspension of external breathing. During apnea there is no movement of the muscles of respiration and the volume of the lungs initially remains unchanged. Depending on the patency (openness) of the airways there may or may not be a flow of gas between the lungs and the environment; gas exchange within the lungs and cellular respiration is not affected. Apnea can be voluntarily achieved (e.g., holding ones breath ), drug induced (e.g., opiate toxicity), mechanically induced (e.g., strangulation or choking), or it can occur as a consequence of neurological disease or trauma. Why? $4.79 WHY? Why do African American children fill the rolls of low achievers? Why do African American children fill the rolls of needs improvement schools? Why do African American children fill the rolls of high school dropouts? Why do African American children fill the rolls of special education classes? The answers to these questions are not found in the traditional educational setting; nor are they found in the plethora of text devoted to social, economic, and educational reforms. The sub proficiency performances of many African American children in reading and reading comprehension contribute significantly to the educational, social, health and economic gaps in our schools and our society. As witnessed by many, it is the ability to read which allows a child to transcend even the poorest environment and social circumstances, and succeed in life. The ability to read is not innate; it is a learned skill that is dependent on the development of the neural (brain) cells necessary for memory. Sleep disordered breathing conditions, like Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS), impact the development of these cells and learning to read becomes difficult. The early diagnosis and treatment of OSAS will give these children an opportunity to learn to read, not be left behind, and develop to their maximum potential. IF YOUR CHILD SNORES, HE/SHE MAY HAVE OBSTRUCTIVE SLEEP APNEA SYNDROME. ASK YOUR DOCTOR TODAY. |

Pulsus Paradoxus $93.99 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles In medicine, a pulsus paradoxus (PP), also paradoxic pulse and paradoxical pulse, is an exaggeration of the normal variation in the pulse during the inspiratory phase of respiration, in which the pulse becomes weaker as one inhales and stronger as one exhales. It is a sign that is indicative of several conditions including cardiac tamponade, pericarditis, chronic sleep apnea, croup, and obstructive lung disease (e.g. asthma, COPD). The paradox in pulsus paradoxus is that, on clinical examination, one can detect beats on cardiac auscultation during inspiration that cannot be palpated at the radial pulse. Modafinil $81.25 Modafinil is an analeptic drug manufactured by Cephalon, and is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of narcolepsy, shift work sleep disorder, and excessive daytime sleepiness associated with obstructive sleep apnea. Modafinil, like other stimulants, increases the release of monoamines, specifically the catecholamines norepinephrine and dopamine, from the synaptic terminals. However, modafinil also elevates hypothalamic histamine levels, leading some researchers to consider Modafinil a wakefulness promoting agent rather than a classic amphetaminelike stimulant (as evidenced by the difference in cFos distribution caused by modafinil as compared to amphetamine). Despite modafinils histaminergic action, it still partially shares the actions of amphetamineclass stimulants due to its effects on norepinephrine and dopamine. An NIAAA study highlighted the need for heightened awareness for potential abuse of and dependence on modafinil in vulnerable populations due to the drugs effect on dopamine in the brains reward center. Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease in Primary Care $95.07 Until recently COPD was largely neglected by health professionals and viewed as the Cinderella of respiratory conditions. Many patients were seen as heartsink cases with a selfinflicted disease. But views are now changing and COPD, like other chronic conditions managed within primary care, has taken on a higher profile within the Government and NHS agenda. This book reflects that change. It looks at the treatment of COPD in primary care: in the GP surgery, in outpatient clinics, and through district and community nursing. COPD management does not depend on purely medical intervention; much can be done to help these patients from a psychological, social and holistic perspective to cope with their everyday activities. Patients lead a frightening existence, struggling to breathe and to cope with their symptoms. The book helps nurses and other healthcare professionals to support these patients. Sleep Debt $68.51 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Sleep debt or sleep deficit is the cumulative effect of not getting enough sleep. A large sleep debt may lead to mental and/or physical fatigue. There are presumed to be two kinds of sleep debt, caused by partial sleep deprivation or total sleep deprivation. Partial sleep deprivation occurs when a person or a lab animal sleeps too little for many days or weeks. Total sleep deprivation means being kept awake for days or weeks. There is debate in the scientific community over the specifics of sleep debt, and it is not considered to be a disorder. There is debate among researchers as to whether the concept of sleep debt describes a measurable phenomenon. The September 2004 issue of the journal Sleep contained dueling editorials from two of the worlds leading sleep researchers: David F. Dinges and Jim Horne. Segmented Sleep $89.22 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Segmented sleep, divided sleep, bimodal sleep pattern and interrupted sleep are modern Western terms for a polyphasic or biphasic sleep pattern found in medieval and early modern Europe and many nonindustrialised societies today, where the nights sleep is divided by one or more periods of wakefulness. This is particularly common in the winter. The human circadian rhythm controls a sleepwake cycle of wakefulness during the day and sleep at night. Superimposed on this basic rhythm is a secondary one of light sleep in the early afternoon (see siesta) and quiet wakefulness in the early morning. Obesity Hypoventilation Syndrome $62.33 Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Obesity hypoventilation syndrome (also known as Pickwickian syndrome) is a condition in which severely overweight people fail to breathe rapidly enough or deeply enough, resulting in low blood oxygen levels and high blood carbon dioxide (CO2) levels. Many people with this condition also frequently stop breathing altogether for short periods of time during sleep (obstructive sleep apnea), resulting in many partial awakenings during the night, which leads to continual sleepiness during the day. The disease puts strain on the heart, which eventually may lead to the symptoms of heart failure, such as leg swelling and various other related symptoms. The most effective treatment is weight loss, but it is often possible to relieve the symptoms by nocturnal ventilation with positive airway pressure (CPAP) or related methods. |

Obstructive sleep apnea and pre-eclampsia: Is there an association? $49.99 Pre-eclampsia is a life threatening disease that is specific for pregnancy. It affects 9% of pregnant population and it has negative implications on the health of the mother and the fetus. It is characterized by high Blood Pressure (equal or above to 140/80mmHg), increased protein in the urine (equal or above .03g/24 hour collection), and general edema. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a sleep breathing disorder characterized by recurrent episodes of breathing cessation accompanied by oxygen desaturation and/or arousal. It occurs in 4% in women and 9% in men and is under diagnosed especially among women. Both pre-eclampsia and OSA share a significant overlap in risk factors especially hypertension, metabolic syndrome, and cardiovascular diseases in general. The objective of this study is to examine the association between pre-eclampsia and OSA and the specific aim is to test the hypothesis that the pre-eclamptic women are at higher risk of OSA than women with normal uncomplicated pregnancies. It is a clinic-based case control study. Cases were all pre-eclamptic patients admitted to University of Louisville (UofL) hospital or attending the high risk maternity clinic between August20–November30, 2007. Controls were healthy pregnant women attending UofL continuity clinic during the same period. Patients were asked to complete three questionnaires: the Berlin questionnaire, the Epworth Sleepiness Scale, and the Fatigue Severity Scale. Demographic data was also collected. Distributions of study subjects with respect to the different variables were calculated. Odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals were also calculated for risk of OSA, excessive daytime sleepiness, and fatigue. The results show that pre-eclamptic women are at higher risk of having OSA, excessive daytime sleepiness, and fatigue than healthy pregnant women. Most demographic characteristics like age, race, height, BMI, weight gain, family history of OSA, previous history of OSA, smoking, and alcohol |
