We present a collection of problems applying the tools of statistical physics to biology. We also present work on the effects of disorder on quantum systems. First, we derive a meanfield phase diagram for the folding of a generic RNA molecule, focusing on the conditions under which a stable ribozyme may fold. Then, we study the statistical mechanics of nucleosorne positioning and transmembrane protein alphahelix prediction, applying related techniques. We compare the physical outcomes of each model, finding nucleosomes suffer from ubiquitous metastability while transmembrane proteins are designed to avoid this problem. Next we study the dynamical properties of a collection of neurons, believed to generate the spontaneous breathing rhythms of mammals, focusing on its ability to produce stable oscillations of activity. Next we address the competition between disorder and strong interaction in 2 D fermionic systems, finding that the Mott gap is completely washed out, leading to a glassy state. Finally, we study the rounding by disorder of first, order quantum phase transitions, both through a general heuristic argument and an indepth study of a particular model. Stress Intervention Programme Breathing Techniques

Stress Intervention Programme Breathing Techniques

$129.05

Change in any form can become painful if individuals are not equipped with the necessary coping mechanisms. The transformation in the educational arena over the last few years has resulted in increased stress levels for school principals. This study investigates the role and impact of a stress intervention programme, the Art of Living workshop, using controlled breathing techniques, on the functioning of primary school principals in the Phoenix Circuit, Durban. A combined quantitative and qualitative research approach employing structured questionnaires and semistructured individual interviews was used to compare the principals stress levels before and after the stress intervention programme. The findings revealed that the intervention programme was successful in reducing principals stress levels. A lack of resources, increased workloads, learner discipline, educator attitudes, indifferent parents and resolving conflicts created stress for principals. Benefits of the Art of Living workshop included the ability to remain calm and relaxed; and improved sleep patterns, increased energy levels and improved human relation skills. Obstructive Sleep Apnea

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common sleep apnea caused by obstruction of the airway. It is characterized by pauses in breathing during sleep. These episodes, called apneas (literally, without breath ), each last long enough that one or more breaths are missed, and occur repeatedly throughout sleep. In obstructive sleep apnea, breathing is interrupted by a physical block to airflow, despite the effort to breathe. Author: Surhone, Lambert M./ Timpledon, Miriam T./ Marseken, Susan F. Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. Central sleep apnea (CSA) or central sleep apnea syndrome (CSAS) is a sleeprelated disorder in which the effort to breathe is diminished or absent, typically for 10 to 30 seconds, either intermittently or in cycles and is usually associated with a reduction in blood oxygen saturation. It is a collective term referring to two breathing disorders: CheyneStokes respiration and periodic breathing. CSA is usually due to an instability in the bodys feedback mechanisms that control respiration. Adults suffering from congestive heart failure are at risk for a form of central sleep apnea called CheyneStokes respiration. This is periodic breathing with recurrent episodes of apnea alternating with episodes of rapid breathing. The Electrical Properties of Disordered Metals

The Electrical Properties of Disordered Metals

$98.77

The theory of metallic conduction has, until recently, been confined to crystalline metals with atoms in regular arrays. The discovery of solid amorphous alloys led to an explosion of measurements of their electronic properties, and the emergence of a range of interesting low temperature phenomena. The book describes in physical terms the theory of the electrical conductivity, Hall coefficient, magnetoresistance and thermopower of disordered metals and alloys. The author begins by showing how conventional Boltzmann theory can be extended and modified when the mean free path of the conduction electrons becomes comparable with their wavelength and interionic separation. Dugdale explores the consequences of this and tests the theory by applying it to experimental data on metallic glasses. Designed as a selfcontained review, the book will appeal to nonspecialist physicists, metallurgists and chemists with an interest in disordered metals. Author: Dugdale, J. S./ Clarke, D. Are you one of the millions worldwide who has trouble sleeping? Do the remedies you read about in books all seem alike, and are the treatments less effective as you age or your lifestyle changes? Are you not sleeping well because you cant clear your mind of disturbing thoughts while you are in bed? After receiving little help from current published sleep-help methods, Author and Research Scientist Robert T. Rewick, a long-time insomnia sufferer, decided to study his sleep problem from a visualization point of view. The result of his study is presented in this Guide, which offers a different approach to sleep mitigation than found in most current insomnia literature. Rewick wants to share his Guide with others who have trouble achieving a good nights rest. He has found that his techniques provide more consistent results than other methods he has tried. He predicts that his approach will also work for you. Rewicks method to help you achieve an improved sleeping pattern focuses on how to control non-productive mental activity in bed. His approach, described in 16 concise chapters, is based on clearing your mind with an innovative breathing technique he calls the Breath Sweep. Rewicks Guide is written in simple, understandable terms, and includes schematic photos and illustrations to help you understand the principles behind his research. 10 Benefits You Will Receive From This Guide 1. Learn why common sleep-help methods dont always work and become less effective as you age. 2. Find that most published sleep-aid techniques are virtually identical in the published literature. 3. Discover that not clearing your mind in bed is the number one obstacle to not falling asleep. 4. Learn the difference between your conscious and unconscious minds and how they affect your sleep. 5. Recognize the value of identifying the problems that disrupt your sleep. 6. Learn the importance of establishing a stabilized breathing pattern in bed. 7. Discover the Authors concept of the Breath Sweep, an effective technique for removing sleep-depriving problems from your mind while in bed. 8. Learn how to mentally transfer problems to an isolated holding spot while you sleep. 9. Study detailed photos and illustrations to help you understand the imagery the author proposes. 10. Appreciate the novel, scientific, and easy-to-understand techniques that work for the Author and he predicts will work for you.

Nasal Breathing

Nasal Breathing

$74.88

Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. Nasal breathing refers to the state of inhaling and exhaling through the nose. It is considered superior to mouth breathing for several reasons. Breathing through the nose has numerous health benefits because the air travels to and from the external environment and the lungs through the sinuses as opposed to the mouth. The sinuses do a better job of filtering the air as it enters the lungs. In addition, the smaller diameter of the sinuses create pressure in the lungs during exhalation, allowing the lungs to have more time to extract oxygen from them. When there is proper oxygencarbon dioxide exchange, the blood will maintain a balanced pH. If carbon dioxide is lost too quickly, as in mouth breathing, oxygen absorption is decreased. Nasal breathing is especially important in certain situations such as dehydration, cold weather, laryngitis, and when the throat is sore or dry because it does not dry the throat as much. Statistics of Linear Polymers in Disordered Media

Statistics of Linear Polymers in Disordered Media

$276.71

With the mapping of the partition function graphs of the nvector magnetic model in the n to 0 limit as the selfavoiding walks, the conformational statistics of linear polymers was clearly understood in early seventies. Various models of disordered solids, percolation model in particular, were also established by late seventies. Subsequently, investigations on thestatistics of linear polymers or of selfavoiding walks in, say, porous medium or disordered lattices were started in early eighties. Inspite of the brilliant ideas forwarded and extensive studies made for the next two decades, the problem is not yet completely solved in its generality. This intriguing and important problem has remained since a topic of vigorous and active research. This book intends to offer the readers a first hand and extensive review of the various aspects of the problem, written by the experts in the respective fields. We hope, the contents of the book will provide a valuable guide for researchers in statistical physics of polymers and will surely induce further research and advances towards a complete understanding of the problem. . First book on statistics of polymers in random media.. Contents straight away from research labs.. Chapters written by foremost experts in the respective fields.. Theories, experiments and computer simulations extensively discussed.. Includes latest developments in understanding related important topics like DNA unzipping, Travelling salesman problem, etc.. With everything that she has and everything that she is thrown into doubt. Maggie must fight for herself even as she fights for the lives of her tiny patients. Maggie’s metamorphosis from fearful to indignant to self-doubting is complex and viscerally powerful. High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles A self contained breathing apparatus, or SCBA, sometimes referred to as a Compressed Air Breathing Apparatus (CABA), air pack, or simply Breathing Apparatus (BA) is a device worn by rescue workers, firefighters, and others to provide breathable air in an IDLH (Immediate Danger to Life and Health) Atmosphere. When not used underwater, they are sometimes called industrial breathing sets. The term selfcontained means that the breathing set is not dependent on a remote supply (e.g., through a long hose). If designed for use under water, it is called SCUBA ( selfcontained underwater breathing apparatus). An SCBA typically has three main components: a highpressure tank (e.g., 2200 psi to 4500 psi), a pressure regulator, and an inhalation connection (mouthpiece, mouth mask or face mask), connected together and mounted to a carrying frame. Breathing Exercises for Asthmatics Elderly

Breathing Exercises for Asthmatics Elderly

$156.13

Asthma is a chronic disease whose current world prevalence is of approximately 300million people. The subdiagnosis and subtreatment of asthma in the elderly are alarming. This book is innovative given the inexistence of publications on breathing exercises for asthmatic elderly. Initially, the author tackles conceptual terms of asthma. Afterwards, there is a discussion on the world growth of the elderly population and of the prevalence of asthma in this population. Finally, the author discusses on the following themes: physical and respiratory exercises for asthmatic people. The book describes the effects and benefits of a program of breathing exercises for asthmatic elderly, showing its application in the Hospital das Clnicas da Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de So Paulo, Brazil, specifying the applied breathing exercises. Therefore, it is a book which will be interesting and will be intelligible not only to professionals in the health area but also to all asthmatic people and their relatives, as well as those who are interested in issues such as physical exercise, health, quality of life, due to the authors didactic and clear explanations. Why?

Why?

$4.79

WHY? Why do African American children fill the rolls of low achievers? Why do African American children fill the rolls of needs improvement schools? Why do African American children fill the rolls of high school dropouts? Why do African American children fill the rolls of special education classes? The answers to these questions are not found in the traditional educational setting; nor are they found in the plethora of text devoted to social, economic, and educational reforms. The sub proficiency performances of many African American children in reading and reading comprehension contribute significantly to the educational, social, health and economic gaps in our schools and our society. As witnessed by many, it is the ability to read which allows a child to transcend even the poorest environment and social circumstances, and succeed in life. The ability to read is not innate; it is a learned skill that is dependent on the development of the neural (brain) cells necessary for memory. Sleep disordered breathing conditions, like Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS), impact the development of these cells and learning to read becomes difficult. The early diagnosis and treatment of OSAS will give these children an opportunity to learn to read, not be left behind, and develop to their maximum potential. IF YOUR CHILD SNORES, HE/SHE MAY HAVE OBSTRUCTIVE SLEEP APNEA SYNDROME. ASK YOUR DOCTOR TODAY.

Fire-Breathing Liberal

Fire-Breathing Liberal

$9.89

There’s a reason The Nation America’s leading progressive magazine named Robert Wexler the country’s "Most Valuable Congressman." It’s the same reason right-wing radio host Rush Limbaugh refers to him as "disgusting." It’s because for the last twelve years Wexler has been Congress’s most outspoken liberal — taking on George W. Bush Dick Cheney Condoleezza Rice Alberto Gonzales General David Petraeus and when necessary even his own party. In Fire-Breathing Liberal Wexler brings readers onto the floor of the House and puts them at the center of some of the last decade’s biggest controversies. He passionately describes how he defended Bill Clinton from impeachment and how he stood up against the Bush brothers when the "butterfly" ballots in his Florida district wrongly decided the 2000 presidential election. He also offers an honest and brutal assessment of the Iraq war and explains why he has become a leader in the movement to impeach Vice President Cheney. And with warmth and wit Wexler shares some of the funniest stories from the corridors of Congress including how he became The Colbert Report ‘s most talked-about guest. This is a remarkably candid first-person account of recent political history that shows government as it has rarely been seen — by a Democrat in the middle of the storms.
