Burnout has been described as a psychological response characterized by emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and a reduced feeling of accomplishment during professional working situations. Secondary traumatic stress symptoms include intrusive thoughts, feelings of shock, avoidance, sadness, fatigue, and sleeping problems for professionals working in environments where they have come into contact with traumatized individuals. Professionals working in disaster and emergency-specific contexts may be at risk for the effects of burnout and secondary traumatic stress due to their close interactions with affected populations and emotionally and physically intense working environments. At the national level, professionals involved in emergency management and disaster response have indicated a low level of job satisfaction. It is possible that a similar level of job dissatisfaction also exists in emergency management professionals at the state and local levels. The present study sought to explore the relationships between Type A personality traits (e.g., Achievement Striving, Anger/Irritability), a history of personal trauma, and work-related variables (e.g., Role Ambiguity, Role Conflict) as contributing factors to increased levels of Secondary Traumatic Stress and Burnout in members of the International Association of Emergency Managers (IAEM). The primary aims of this study were to identify the degree to which emergency managers reported Career Engagement, Burnout, and Secondary Traumatic Stress as measured by the Professional Quality of Life Scales as well as possible factors that may influence these outcomes. The results indicated that Trait Anger, Role Conflict, and Role Ambiguity were each independently significant predictors of the outcome variables and that Personal Trauma History amplified the relationship between Trait Anger and Secondary Traumatic Stress. Implications of these findings and suggestions for future research are discussed.
