The Quick And Easy Sleep Apnea Book $7.99 If you have sleep apnea, think you might have it, or know someone who does, this book is for you! Sleep apnea is a relatively new subject in health care. It is very common and is associated with many other medical conditions, particularly high blood pressure, heart disease, and strokes. However, awareness about sleep apnea is lacking, and misconceptions are common. It is very easy to pass off the signs and symptoms of sleep apnea. Most people with this condition don’t even know they have it. This is very unfortunate because effective, even life-transforming, treatment is available. The consequences of untreated sleep apnea are wide-ranging and can be devastating. This book is a concise, illustrated, practical, and readable guide to this common and potentially serious condition. The reader will learn about when to suspect sleep apnea, what other conditions are linked to it, why it is important to detect it, how to get tested for it, and what to expect if treatment is required. The book is written by a doctor who is involved in the care of patients with sleep apnea and many of the health problems that go with it. |

Central Sleep Apnea $89.22 Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. Central sleep apnea (CSA) or central sleep apnea syndrome (CSAS) is a sleeprelated disorder in which the effort to breathe is diminished or absent, typically for 10 to 30 seconds, either intermittently or in cycles and is usually associated with a reduction in blood oxygen saturation. It is a collective term referring to two breathing disorders: CheyneStokes respiration and periodic breathing. CSA is usually due to an instability in the bodys feedback mechanisms that control respiration. Adults suffering from congestive heart failure are at risk for a form of central sleep apnea called CheyneStokes respiration. This is periodic breathing with recurrent episodes of apnea alternating with episodes of rapid breathing. Assessment of Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome $124.27 Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS) is a very common sleep disorder that is associated with cardiovascular and neurocognitive impairments. The pathophysiological mechanisms underlying the morbidity of OSAS are not completely understood, which make the research on the OSAS an important issue. Obstructive sleep apnea episodes were carefully selected and segmented in three parts, the OSA event and a certain period immediately preceding and following the event, in order to assess the dynamic electroencephalographic (EEG) power changes, in four frequency bands: delta, theta, alpha and beta. Autonomic Nervous System activity was also assessed through the spectral analysis of heart rate variability components in the three mentioned periods. Continuous wavelet transform was the elected spectral analysis technique. To better visualize the EEG spectral changes during OSA episodes across the whole brain, topographic EEG brain mapping was carried out. This research should be especially useful to health professionals, who are focused on sleep disorders, or to engineers interested in the analysis of biomedical signals. Apnea $78.07 Apnea is a term for suspension of external breathing. During apnea there is no movement of the muscles of respiration and the volume of the lungs initially remains unchanged. Depending on the patency (openness) of the airways there may or may not be a flow of gas between the lungs and the environment; gas exchange within the lungs and cellular respiration is not affected. Apnea can be voluntarily achieved (e.g., holding ones breath ), drug induced (e.g., opiate toxicity), mechanically induced (e.g., strangulation or choking), or it can occur as a consequence of neurological disease or trauma. Deep Sleep Therapy $90.81 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Deep Sleep Therapy (or Deep Sedation Therapy, DST) was a psychiatric treatment based on the use of psychiatric drugs to induce a coma in patients diagnosed with mental disorder. Induction of deep sleep for psychiatric purposes was first tried by Scottish psychiatrist Neil Macleod at the turn of the 20th century. He used bromide sleep in a few psychiatric patients, one of whom died. His method was adopted by some other physicians but soon abandoned, perhaps because it was considered too toxic or reckless. In 1915, Giuseppe Epifanio tried barbiturateinduced coma therapy in a psychiatric clinic in Italy, but his reports made little impact. Deep Sleep Therapy was popularized in the 1920s by Swiss psychiatrist Jakob Klaesi, using a combination of two new barbiturates from pharmaceutical company Roche. Klaesis method became widely known and occasionally used as a procedure for psychotic illness in the 1930s and 1940s. Author: Surhone, Lambert M./ Tennoe, Mariam T./ Henssonow, Susan F. Mobile Acquisition Platform for Sleep Assessment $103.56 Sleep disorders affect a large percentage of the population all over the world and are often associated with other pathologies. Therefore, an early and accurate diagnosis is determinant to provide adequate treatment. While polysomnography is the preferred tool in this type of diagnosis, the exam is expensive, uncomfortable for the patient and usually it must be performed in clinical facilities. The scope of this thesis is to provide a highly portable system, an alternative to existing sleep assessment tools, supported by a physiological monitoring belt and a mobile phone connected via Bluetooth. The Mobile Acquisition Platform for Sleep Assessment (MAPSA) is an easytouse and interactive system, which monitors several physiological signals, as well as sleep related information, through sleep and dream ediaries. While this system acquires a limited set of physiological data, it does not signi cantly interfere with the normal routine of the patient, which allows long time monitoring exams and the diagnosis of other types of disorders not easily detectable by the polysomnography. The MAPSA should aid sleep physicians in their daily practice. Why? $2.99 WHY? Why do African American children fill the rolls of low achievers? Why do African American children fill the rolls of needs improvement schools? Why do African American children fill the rolls of high school dropouts? Why do African American children fill the rolls of special education classes? The answers to these questions are not found in the traditional educational setting; nor are they found in the plethora of text devoted to social, economic, and educational reforms. The sub proficiency performances of many African American children in reading and reading comprehension contribute significantly to the educational, social, health and economic gaps in our schools and our society. As witnessed by many, it is the ability to read which allows a child to transcend even the poorest environment and social circumstances, and succeed in life. The ability to read is not innate; it is a learned skill that is dependent on the development of the neural (brain) cells necessary for memory. Sleep disordered breathing conditions, like Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS), impact the development of these cells and learning to read becomes difficult. The early diagnosis and treatment of OSAS will give these children an opportunity to learn to read, not be left behind, and develop to their maximum potential. IF YOUR CHILD SNORES, HE/SHE MAY HAVE OBSTRUCTIVE SLEEP APNEA SYNDROME. ASK YOUR DOCTOR TODAY. |

Respironics Actiwatch L Actigraphy System, Diagnoses Sleep Disorders $2629.99 Actiwatch Actigraphy System Actiwatch Family of Ambulatory Actigraphy Devices: The Actiwatch Score, Actiwatch-2, and Actiwatch Spectrum use actigraphy principles to provide sleep schedule variability, sleep quantity and quality statistics and daytime activity patterns so you can better identify therapeutic options and understand responses to treatment for patients. All three models collect reliable, objective data on sleep/wake patterns for multiple days in a subject’s ambulatory environment with the comfort and aesthetics of a standard wrist watch. Activity level is recognized as a valuable indicator for medical problems and can provide answers to many research questions. Activity levels correlate with sleep/wake patterns, pain level, mood, energy expenditure, fatigue/alertness and other quantifiable parameters. An Actiwatch actigraph also provides an objective record for tracking and documenting normal and abnormal sleep/wake patterns and PLMS. Two examples of the use of the Actiwatch are: Sleep/Wake Patterns and General Activity Level. A digitally integrated recording of wrist activity is a reliable indicator of Sleep/Wake state. The Actiwatch is an actigraphy device that is the size of a standard wrist watch. It allows for the recording of the smallest movements for days, weeks, or even months. When worn on the wrist, an Actiwatch actigraph can generate an Activity record like the one shown below to be used as a tool to document: Sleep/Wake Patterns Sleep Disorders Circadian Rhythms Disorders Disturbances brought on by Shift WorkReal time impedance display. Basic Activity Levels. Compliance with Exercise Routines. Periodic Limb Movement in Sleep (PLMS). Actiware-PLM software is used for assessing the magnitude and periodicity of limb movements during sleep. Two Actiwatch 64s are used to monitor the subject for three consecutive nights. You can assess movement in both legs on any given night to determine: Total time of PLM Total number of PLM Occurrences per leg Average PLM duration Simultaneous PLMs in both legs Sleep Disturbance from PLM AW-L Actigraph with Integrated Light Sensor The Actiwatch-L actigraph has a small, very high performance light sensor integrated into its case in place of an event marker. With each activity record that is recorded, the light level is also recorded in Lux. Like all of our Actiwatches, the AW-L uses actigraphy principles to record activity information and can be used to analyze sleep quality. The AW-L may be used to verify time, length and frequency of treatments for SAD patients (Seasonal Affective Disorder). These values may be correlated with changes in sleep/wake patterns from the actigraphy record. Specifications: Weight (without protective case): 16 grams. Modafinil $81.25 Modafinil is an analeptic drug manufactured by Cephalon, and is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of narcolepsy, shift work sleep disorder, and excessive daytime sleepiness associated with obstructive sleep apnea. Modafinil, like other stimulants, increases the release of monoamines, specifically the catecholamines norepinephrine and dopamine, from the synaptic terminals. However, modafinil also elevates hypothalamic histamine levels, leading some researchers to consider Modafinil a wakefulness promoting agent rather than a classic amphetaminelike stimulant (as evidenced by the difference in cFos distribution caused by modafinil as compared to amphetamine). Despite modafinils histaminergic action, it still partially shares the actions of amphetamineclass stimulants due to its effects on norepinephrine and dopamine. An NIAAA study highlighted the need for heightened awareness for potential abuse of and dependence on modafinil in vulnerable populations due to the drugs effect on dopamine in the brains reward center. Acute and Emergent Events in Sleep Disorders $51.29 America is a 24/7 lifestyle. This makes sleep–especially disruptions in sleep–a pressing concern for many Americans. According to the National Sleep Foundation (NSF), approximately 40 million Americans suffer from chronic sleep disorders, and an estimated 20-30 million others experience sleep-related problems. Chronic sleep disorders may also lead to psychiatric disorders such as depression and schizophrenia. Moreover, neurological disorders such as seizures, strokes, Parkinson’s, etc, and medical disorders such as asthma or arrhythmia, also affect the quality of sleep Americans receive.Acute and Emergent Events in Sleep Disorders creates awareness for the management of disorders that occur during sleep. Chokroverty and Sahota bring greater awareness to the treatment of sleep disorders, as well as treatments of neurological, medical, and psychiatric disorders. The book has six different sections covers a wide range of topics dealing with how to treat and manage these events. For example, when to prescribe CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) machines for sleep apnea patients’ whose risks are doubled for stroke or death, as compared to those without the disorder. Another segment discusses treatment of Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS), a movement disorder which is amplified when trying to rest. Managing depression, which affects patients’ sleep cycles, is analyzed as well as its relation to sleep-deprivation and insomnia. Considerations for sleep disorders in children, such as Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) are also presented. Beyond Alzheimer’s: How to Avoid the Modern Epidemic of Dementia $24.95 This groundbreaking explanation of the causes and treatment of Alzheimer’s disease rests on the author’s belief that Alzheimer’s is merely one of several types of dementia—and that in most cases dementia is avoidable. He further explains that the various forms of dementia may well be different manifestations of the same set of underlying problems. Rather than being the inevitable result of aging, the author asserts dementia is primarily the result of bad diet, stress, lack of mental and physical exercise, and other poor lifestyle choices. Dr. Mendelson begins his book with a straightforward explanation of how the brain ages—physically, structurally, and chemically. He then explains the various methods for diagnosing dementia, as well as how it can often be misdiagnosed if a person has suffered a head injury or stroke, has a hormone or vitamin deficiency, or is taking a medication whose side effects can mimic dementia. The remainder of the book is prescriptive, and offers hope to both Alzheimer’s patients and their caregivers by recommending scientifically tested herbs, vitamins and nutraceuticals that can help mitigate or delay the effects of dementia. Finally, the author suggests lifestyle changes that might help a person avoid dementia altogether, commonsense health tips that include steps to prevent heart disease and diabetes, treatment for sleep apnea, maintaining an ideal body weight, and even engaging in a more active social life. |

Obesity Hypoventilation Syndrome $62.33 Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Obesity hypoventilation syndrome (also known as Pickwickian syndrome) is a condition in which severely overweight people fail to breathe rapidly enough or deeply enough, resulting in low blood oxygen levels and high blood carbon dioxide (CO2) levels. Many people with this condition also frequently stop breathing altogether for short periods of time during sleep (obstructive sleep apnea), resulting in many partial awakenings during the night, which leads to continual sleepiness during the day. The disease puts strain on the heart, which eventually may lead to the symptoms of heart failure, such as leg swelling and various other related symptoms. The most effective treatment is weight loss, but it is often possible to relieve the symptoms by nocturnal ventilation with positive airway pressure (CPAP) or related methods. |

Relationship of obstructive sleep apnea and sickle cell disease severity in children. $49.99 Statement of the Problem. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) initiates hypoxemia and elevated inflammatory markers, events which contribute to vaso-occlusion in sickle cell disease (SCD) independent of OSA. Children with SCD are at increased risk of developing OSA due to SCD-related adenotonsillar hypertrophy, and OSA may increase vaso-occlusion and SCD severity through hypoxemia and inflammation. Identification of OSA-related factors influencing SCD severity is important to reduce SCD-related complications.;Purpose. The purpose of this study was to test the hypotheses that SCD severity is associated with OSA, is associated with OSA-related changes in polysomnography parameters and treatment of OSA with adenotonsillectomy decreases SCD severity. Methods: A case series study was conducted collecting data from the medical record. Subjects were children aged 2-18 years with SCD, referred to a sleep laboratory for evaluation of OSA. Outcome measures included rates of help-seeking behaviors (medical contacts and days of care) for vaso-occlusive crises at 2 time points, and a Sickle Cell Disease Severity Index (DSI) score. Analyses were descriptive and nonparametric, with exploratory regression modeling.;Results. Younger children had more severe OSA ( r=-.314, p=.017), and older children had more severe SCD (medical contacts, r=.303, p=.021; days of care, r=.369, p=.007). Underweight adolescents had the highest obstructive apnea-hypopnea indexes (OAHI). Medical contacts decreased as OSA severity increased, H(2)=7.85, p<.05; and days of care showed a decreasing trend with increasing OSA severity, r=-.26, p<.01. Medical contacts were negatively associated with OAHI (p<.01), respiratory arousal index (p<.01) and peak end-tidal CO 2 (p<.05); days of care were negatively associated with OAHI (p<.05); and DSI scores were negatively associated with mean sleep oxyhemoglobin saturation (p<.01) and sleep efficiency (p<.05).
